## Record comments in Airtable overview

> [!CAUTION]
> Note
>
> - Commenting and @mentioning collaborators are only available for collaborators with [Commenter permissions or higher](/docs/permission-levels-and-billing).
> - You will only receive comment notifications if you have [verified the email address](/docs/account-email-verification) associated with your Airtable account.
> - When mentioning collaborators, they are [automatically notified](https://support.airtable.com/docs/airtable-collaboration-overview#watching-comments) of additional comments you make on that record, even when they are not directly mentioned.
> - Business and Enterprise Scale customers can also tag user groups in comments and long text fields.

When a collaborator comments on a record, those comments are visible in a record's activity feed and the record-level revision history when expanded.

## Commenting and @mentioning customers in a record

To comment or @mention a collaborator in a record:

1. Open your [Airtable home screen](https://airtable.com/).
2. Open the base where you want to @mention someone or comment on a record.
3. Select the record you want to expand and press your spacebar.
4. Enter your comment in the bottom right.
  1. You can also mention collaborators by typing the @ symbol, followed by their name in the bottom right.

1. Open your [Airtable home screen](https://airtable.com/).
2. Click your account profile photo in the top-right corner.
3. Click **Notification preferences**.
4. Select the checkboxes next to “Mobile push notifications” and “Email.”

## Disabling comment notifications

To turn off comment notifications in Airtable:

1. Open your [Airtable home screen](https://airtable.com/).
2. Click your account profile photo in the top-right corner.
3. Click **Notification preferences**.
4. Deselect the checkboxes next to “Mobile push notifications” and “Email.”

## Watching record comments

To watch comments in Airtable:

1. Open your [Airtable home screen](https://airtable.com/).
2. Select and open your preferred base.
3. Select the record you want to expand and press your spacebar.
4. Click the bell icon in the top-right corner.
5. Select either “Notify me only for @ mentions” or “Notify me about all comments.”

## Watching user field comments

When a [user field type](/docs/user-field-type) is set up to notify users when they’re added, future collaborators will automatically be added to watch any comments that they are assigned to. Watching via a user field allows you to watch multiple records' comments at one time by copying and pasting a collaborator's information into multiple cells simultaneously. To watch user field comments in Airtable:

1. Open your [Airtable home screen](https://airtable.com/).
2. Select and open your preferred base.
3. Select your user field.
4. Toggle on the “Notify users with base access when they're added” option.

## Using AI to summarize comments

In long comment threads, it can sometimes be difficult to catch up on all of the ideas, changes, or updates that were discussed about a record in Airtable. This is especially true when:

- You are a leader/manager at your organization and want a high-level, root understanding of a conversation as quickly as possible.
- Your team has multiple projects or tasks that are being managed and it’s helpful to gain quick insight.
- You were out sick, on vacation, or on paternity/maternity leave and need to catch up in Airtable.

Summarizing comments using Airtable AI can help with these types of use cases.

**To summarize all of the comments made in a record within a base or an interface.**

1. Open your [Airtable home screen](https://airtable.com/).
2. Open the base and [expand the record](/docs/record-level-revision-history-overview) you want to summarize.
3. At the top of the comments section on the right side of the expanded record, click **Summarize**.
4. Depending on the number of comments, it may take a moment for the AI to finish summarizing. Once finished you’ll see a text summary appear.

**From an interface:**

1. Navigate to the interface page and record of your choice and [click into the record details](/docs/record-level-revision-history-overview). Note that not all interface pages allow for record details to be viewed. Additionally, not all record detail pages will have comments enabled.
2. Click on **Add a comment…** near the bottom of the record detail page.
3. Click the **Summarize** option.

Regardless of the surface you are using, the AI may take a moment to generate a summary of the comments for you to read, especially when there is a particularly long comment history.

> [!CAUTION]
> Note
>
> Make sure that you are in the “Comments” section. If the dropdown option is on “All activity” or “Revision history” then you will not see the **Summarize** button appear.

**Deleting AI comment summaries**

1. Click the **…** icon in the upper right corner of the summary box.

2. Click the **Delete summary** option.
3. After deleting the summary, the **Summarize** button should reappear.

**Understanding the expected behavior and limitations of summarized comments**

**Expected behavior**

- All comments will be summarized
- Summaries can be seen by other collaborators

**Limitations**

- A subsection of comments cannot be summarized, only the whole feed of comments can be summarized.
- The Airtable Web API is unable to pull out the metadata of summarized comments
- When the “[Prevent external users from seeing each other](https://support.airtable.com/docs/managing-and-sharing-interfaces#setting-collaborator-visibility)” setting is enabled, the ability to summarize comments will be disabled

## Attaching files to comments

Collaborators can attach files directly to record comments to provide additional context, share visual references, and collaborate on specific documents.

## Resolving comments

This feature allows you to mark individual comments as resolved when they've been addressed. Resolved comments are clearly marked and are filtered out of the activity feed by default, so your team can quickly see what's handled versus what still needs attention. You can also re-open them anytime if something needs another look.

To resolve comments:

1. Open up the base → table → record containing the comments you want to resolve.
  1. You want to open the record in an [expanded view](/v1/docs/record-level-revision-history-overview).
  2. You might also access comments via an interface record detail page.
  3. If you have notification alerts on, then you may also access comments via [the notifications menu](/v1/docs/managing-airtable-notifications).
2. After accessing the comment feed, hover over the record you want to resolve.
3. Click the check icon: ![](https://cdn.airtable.document360.io/d0ee2ee4-3f78-47c7-b388-85e40be9fb89/Images/Documentation/Screenshot 2026-03-13 at 3.23.10 PM.png)

To re-open previously resolved comments:

1. Navigate to the comment feed.
  1. Note that you may need to click the dropdown menu and click **All activity** or **All comments,**and then click **Show resolved comments** if that option is currently unchecked ![](https://cdn.airtable.document360.io/d0ee2ee4-3f78-47c7-b388-85e40be9fb89/Images/Documentation/Screenshot 2026-03-13 at 3.24.41 PM.png)
2. Hover over the resolved comment that you want to re-open.
3. Click the counter-clockwise wheel icon: ![](https://cdn.airtable.document360.io/d0ee2ee4-3f78-47c7-b388-85e40be9fb89/Images/Documentation/Screenshot 2026-03-13 at 3.27.54 PM.png)
4. The comment will now appear in the main comments/activity feed without the “Resolved” tag next to it.

## FAQs

**When will I receive comment notifications in the email inbox associated with the email account that is verified under my Airtable account?**

You will receive comment notifications when you:

- Comment on a record.
- Are mentioned in a record or comment.
- When a collaborator or automation [adds you to a user field type](/docs/watching-comments#user_field) with the option to "Notify users when they’re added" turned on before adding new collaborators to records.

**Why are base comments visible after downgrading my Airtable plan?**

Although your [workspace's plan limits](/docs/airtable-plans) your [revision history](/docs/record-level-revision-history-overview), base comments remain visible until manually deleted.

**How do I duplicate a base without comments?**

To create a copy of your preferred base without comments, you can [duplicate the base](https://support.airtable.com/docs/creating-a-new-empty-base#duplicating-airtable-bases)and uncheck the "Duplicate comments" box.

**Why are interface-only users not automatically set to watch/follow comments or be notified when added to user fields from form submissions?**

Tagging an interface-only collaborator from a user field in a form will NOT automatically set the person to start watching/following the record or notify the user that they have been added to the record. This is because, for interface-only collaborators, it is not clear where the collaborator cell tag notification should take them since that particular record can be shown across multiple interface pages/bundles. As a result, Airtable doesn’t support notifying these users when they are tagged in a user field from a form. Base collaborator notifications are supported because the notification can take them straight to the record in base.

As a workaround, you can set up an automation to [email](https://support.airtable.com/docs/send-an-email-action) or [Slack](https://support.airtable.com/docs/airtable-automation-actions-slack) the assignee to let them know they've been tagged. You can include a direct link to the record by selecting the “Page record URL” token in the email/Slack message and then choosing the specific interface page you want them to view. The assignee will then be able to manually enable "Notify me about all comments" within the interface record.

**Is there a way to globally set yourself to watch all comments that occur in a base?**

There is no global/default setting to automatically watch all comments for all collaborators in a base. Airtable sends comment notifications only when a user is @mentioned or has explicitly enabled “watch all comments” on a record.

- Enabling “watch all comments” takes effect going forward and does not generate notifications for prior comments.
- To receive notifications, use @mentions or enable “watch all comments” on the relevant records.

**Can I delete comments made in Airtable by now-deactivated collaborators?**

No. Comments by deactivated collaborators in Airtable cannot be deleted.

**Does attaching files to a comment add it to an attachment field on the record**

No. Comment attachments are separate from attachment field values. Attaching a file to a comment does not add it to an attachment field on the record.

**Do comment attachments count toward a base’s storage limit?**

Yes. Comment attachments count toward your base's overall storage limit.
